Flood simulation is one of the emerging applications for laser
altimetry data. Very high vertical accuracy of the digital surface
model is required for the simulation to give meaningful results.
Laser altimetry is able to deliver sufficiently accurate surface
data rapidly and efficiently.
This image shows a flood simulation for the city of Bonn. The
river Rhine on the left occasionally rises above its banks to
cause substantial damage to the surrounding area. In this picture
a simulated flood situation (lighter blue) has been superimposed
over the normal status (darker blue). It becomes obvious from
this simulation which buildings and streets are most endangered
by inundation. This type of data can therefore be used to design
effective countermeasures. |
