For the production of topographic maps surface objects like trees
and buildings must be filtered from a digital surface model as
generated by an imaging laser altimeter.
This is illustrated by the two images below: the top image shows
a DSM of a 1000 x 1000 m area with 1 m grid size in an oblique
shaded-relief representation. After filtering, all surface objects are removed
and a pure terrain model (DTM) remains, as in the bottom image.
This may then be used to generate topographic maps, etc.
With laser altimetry data filtering can be done using mostly automated
routines that require minimal manual interaction to arrive at
precise terrain models.
